Fishing Licences

Before you go fishing in any fresh water river, lake, canal or pond 

You must have a rod licence issued by the Environment agency.

  • All anglers over the age of 12 must be in possession of a rod licence before 
  • they go fishing.
  • If you are aged between 12 and 16 you can purchase a concessionary 
  • licence at a lower cost than a full adult licence.
  • Rod licences cover all waters in England and Wales and allow you to 
  • use up to two rods at any one time. This only applies if the angling club 
  • or association who control the water allow – please check.
  • A rod licence is valid from April 1st and expires on March 31st.
  • Fishing without a current rod licence is breaking the law you will be 
  • fined if you get caught.
  • When you have a licence you must –
    • Carry it with you at all times when fishing.
    • Show your rod licence to an Environment Agency Bailiff 
    • when asked to do so. All EA bailiffs carry identification 
    • if you are unsure about the person then ask to see this.
    • Follow any local bylaws that apply. A copy of these is 
    • available by contacting your local Environment Agency office.
